Early Fall, Early Evening

"Early Fall, Early Evening" 8x10 pastel $125.00

I love landscapes, those quiet places that take your breath away.  This was from a visit to the New Hampshire White Mountains as the trees were just beginning to turn.

I went to Blick on Saturday and Unison pastels were on sale so I bought about a dozen to round off my set.  I couldn't wait to try them out. When I work in pastel I have a paper trough under my work to catch stray pastel dust.  Since I do so many landscapes the dust is a soft gray green.  I had water to it and make a new pastel.  Today when I removed the trough it spilled all over my working pastels! They will clean up easily and I did manage to salvage most of the dust.

Pomegranites and new brushes

"Pomegranites" 6x12 oil $150.00

This was fun to do from beginning to end. Next I will do a grisaille of the same set up.  I like to do one very loose and painterly and tighten up on the next.

Blick was having a sale this week-end for its favorite customers and I went in even though I didn't need anything, maybe that's why I am a favorite customer.

I found a brush called a filbert but not like any filbert I had ever seen.  I fell in love with its shape and had to have it.  Then I saw the sign that said: "you will fall in love with the shape even before you know how wonderful it is".  I used it for the first time and it really is wonderful.  A Blick Master synthetic filbert size 16.  Now I want a whole set!

The top is the filbert, the other 2 are Blick master synthetics also, size 2 and 8.

Value Study

Value Study 5x5
I did this little grisaille to practice glazing.
I can already imagine it in transparent shades of red and green.

I didn't have time to set up my oils or pull out my pastels but I did have time for a fall walk and some fun with Yuppo paper.

I-Hsing Teapot and Japanese Lanterns

I-Hsing Teapot and Japanese Lanterns 8x8 oil $125.00

This is the alla prima version of my last post.  I used the same drawing and set up.  This one was supposed to be easy, after all I had lots of practice with the drawing and the first painting.  I worked all morning and then wiped it out.  After lunch I had a better time with it but I think it still needs some tweaking.  I can't wait to start applying glazes to the first version.

I-Hsing Teapot and Japanese Lanterns

I-Hsing Teapot and Japanese Lanterns 8x8 oil

I started taking a new class - Still life in Oil with Trish Gibbs.  We are exploring a number of still life techniques.  The first was Alla Prima.  The second used an imprimatur of umber with wipe-outs and umber additions. I did this one at home and it was fun - it felt like drawing with a brush and a small one at that!  The next step is to let it dry and apply transparent glazes.

In the next class we will be doing a grisaille - I can't wait!
